Polyvagal Therapy

Polyvagal Therapy

Polyvagal therapy is an approach to how the autonomic nervous system (ANS) regulates our physiological and emotional responses to safety, stress, and threat. It emphasizes the role of the vagus nerve, a major nerve connecting the brain to the body, in shaping social behavior, emotional regulation, and trauma responses.

Key benefits: Improved emotional regulation – Helps individuals identify when they are stuck in hyperarousal or hypoarousal and provides tools to calm or activate the nervous system appropriately.

Enhanced social connection supports building trust, empathy, and healthy relationships by activating the social engagement system. Better trauma recovery – Offers a framework to understand why trauma causes freeze, dissociation, or hypervigilance, and guides somatic or therapeutic interventions to restore balance. Practical strategies for stress – Provides concrete ways (breathing, movement, vocalization, or social cues) to shift nervous system states and feel safe in the present moment. In short, this framework gives a roadmap for both understanding and supporting the body’s natural ability to return to safety and resilience after stress or trauma.
